Why you get impressions but no clicks

Impressions but almost no clicks? Usually it is your position, sometimes an AI Overview or a result that does not match the search. How to tell which.

In this lesson

  • Check your position first: past position 10, few people see your result.
  • On page one, a low click-through rate usually means the title or description misses what the searcher wanted.
  • AI Overviews lower clicks for every result on the page, not just yours.

Impressions with no clicks usually means Google is showing your page where people do not look: page two, or the bottom of page one. Less often, your result is visible but the title and description do not match what the searcher wanted, or something above you answers the search on Google's own page. Search Console can tell these apart in a few minutes.

Where is the page ranking?

Check position first, because it explains most cases. In the Performance report, open the Queries tab and add Average position.

If the searches with impressions sit beyond position 10, clicks will be close to zero whatever the page says. In Backlinko's study of 4 million results, only 0.63% of searchers clicked anything on page two. The fix there is ranking higher, not rewriting the snippet: see how to find searches you almost rank for.

Remember that an impression counts when your link is on the results page, even if the searcher never scrolled to it (Google's definition). High impressions at a low position is normal.

Does your result match the search?

Then ask:

  • Does the title say what the page is about, in the searcher's words?
  • Does the meta description (the text under your link in Google) answer what they typed, or does Google show text from elsewhere on the page?
  • Is the page the wrong type for the search? Someone typing a definition question wants an explanation, not a pricing page.

A mismatch here is fixable on the page. Change the title and description, then compare the same search's CTR over the following month.

Is something above you answering the search?

Some searches are answered on Google's own page: a definition, a calculation, or an AI Overview. When that happens, fewer people click any result. A Pew Research Center study of 68,879 Google searches in March 2025 measured it:

8%
of visits ended in a click on a normal result when an AI summary appearedPew Research Center, 2025
15%
of visits ended in a click when no AI summary appearedPew Research Center, 2025

Where you have a choice, prefer searches where the searcher needs more than a one-line answer, such as how-to questions and comparisons. A full page still earns the click there.

Are the searches ones you want?

Look at which searches carry the impressions. A page can collect thousands of impressions from searches that share a word with your product and nothing else. Those rarely turn into clicks. Judge a page by the searches that match what it offers.

What should you do first?

  1. Filter to searches where the page ranks in the top 10.
  2. Among those, find the ones with a CTR well below the page's others.
  3. Rewrite the title and description for that search, and note the date.
  4. Check the same search again in four weeks.

Quick answers

Why do I have impressions but no clicks in Search Console?
Most often because your average position is on page two or low on page one, where few people scroll. Other causes are a title and description that do not match what the searcher wanted, an AI Overview or other feature answering the search above you, or searches that mention your brand in a way unrelated to your product.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
The best public evidence says yes. In a Pew Research Center study of 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025, people clicked a normal result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did.
