How long until a new site shows on Google?

Google says crawling a new page can take from a few days to a few weeks, and that it does not guarantee it will index a page at all. Search Console can take up to a week to show data for a newly added site. Ranking for searches people make in volume takes longer again, and Google publishes no timeline for it.

What happens in the first weeks?

A new site goes through the same three stages as any page, covered in how Google finds and ranks a page:

1. Found. Google learns the address, from your sitemap or a link.
2. Indexed. Google reads the page and decides whether to keep it.
3. Shown. The page starts to appear for searches, usually low down at first.

Search Console shows each one: the Sitemaps report for the first, the Page indexing report for the second, and impressions in the Performance report for the third.

What can you do to shorten it?

You can remove the delays that are on your side:

• Submit a sitemap in Search Console on day one. See how to set up Search Console.
• Link every new page from a page Google already knows, such as your homepage or a main guide.
• Request indexing for your five or so most important pages with URL Inspection. There is a daily limit, so save it for the pages that matter.
• Check nothing blocks Google. A leftover noindex tag from a staging site, or a robots.txt rule (the file that tells bots what they may read), will stop indexing however long you wait. URL Inspection shows both.

Why do some pages never get indexed?

How long until it ranks?

Being indexed only makes a page eligible. Where it ranks depends on how well it answers the search compared with the pages already there, and on how many other sites link to yours (backlinks), which is the strongest single measured link to ranking in Backlinko's study of 11.8 million results. A new site with no links should start with specific searches that few established sites answer well, then build from there.
